”Culture”
The concept for the 24Th issue is a very controversial one that has been transformed a lot meaning-wise throughout the last few centuries. Culture.
I want to share with you the official meaning of culture that I have obtained from couple of ”reliable” or ”non-reliable” sources.
Culture: The set of attitudes, thoughts, language and art that constitute a society’s shared way of being, feeling and thinking, extensive and systematic knowledge that has been acquired on a certain subject.
Culture: The whole of the values that have been created through historical and social evolution, and the instruments that enable humanity to pass on this knowledge to the forthcoming generations.
Culture: Advanced knowledge of reasoning, criticism and taste acquired by experience and experimentation.
These definitions which are accurate as much as they are uninspiring describe a meaning of culture that have been idealized but does not really exist.
Culture is the whole of the creations that have been published, announced and for these reasons adopted by the masses and become a part of their customs.
Behind this definition of culture there is a large amount of human experience that have been lived by individuals and smaller populations which have not become a part of the dominant cultural values.
Jean Dubuffet suggests that the meaning of highly relative words such as ”true”, ”good”, ”beautiful” which have been somehow agreed upon in the shared consciousness of the society are regulated by the ”cultural police”. These are responsible with suppressing the notions, understandings and creations that can free crowds from the dominant ways of perception.
On the contrary to popular belief, now culture is not something which is created by the society itself, but something that creates and shapes the society.
